reels 'n' rolls tween the cracks...

a few weeks back i headed downtown in order to bring three rolls of film that i had snapped when ethan and i headed into the woods in july. with me, along came a fourth roll of 120 film that had been sitting on my desk for a couple of years. like a lucky 7s scratch off, i had no idea what jewels would be released through the twisting and turning of cylinders and chemicals.

that roll, it turned out, dated back to one of the two wintertimes i had spent in toronto over the past couple of years. the reel in fact, was from one particularly photographic outing i had gone on with my friend saada, a few of the photos were of her roaming toronto laneways and snapping away too.

the images, twelve in all, were a reminder of how much i love to snap photographs, negatives and square ones at that! the eye can play tricks on us, though not as much as the mind, which has a tendency to roam where it may, in fields of glory and often navigating in no-man's land over barb wire and the like...

yes, so to the image. though often people tend to try and compare toronto and new york city, i find attempts to be futile. both cities are wonderfully diverse places, grand and full of arts galore, culture cosmopolitan and people walking, for if anything defines a city of excellence, people walking often may be the first thing on my list and should be up there in the official definition of a city.

one of the major differences between toronto and new york city is the tolerance of unofficial postering. here in new york, often on green walls that divide work spaces from sidewalks, there will be spray painted brightly, three words - Post No Bills. Now if toronto has those words, they aren't understood as wheat pasting and poster stapling are everywhere, similar to memories i have of walls and trees and parking machines in european lands across the pond atlantico.

so there i was. saada photographing off somewhere and me and my trusty rollei. i must have been enamored with the beauty of the hundreds of staples, now brown and rusted and hopefully not paining this city tree too much...

toronto, ontario. some wonderful winter afternoon between 2009 and 2011.

more beauty between the twelve cracks throughout the week...
