a painter on a peak.

on the day that e and i climbed to the rocky crest of mt. colden there were only a few people on the top, none of them did we say much too, besides talking to a woman who asked about the route we had just taken up the mountain and then leaned in to her partner and asked him if they should go that way or the way they came from, his response, "whichever way you'd like to go..." and she turned and they together headed down the path we came from.  when we first approached the summit, there were two girls eating lunch and watching the vista and the lakes below, a perfect place to eat lunch, though e and i carried on to find some respite from the wind, a little covered area where we could fire up our stove and make soup.

one man, a bearded merlin, roamed the summit. i, naturally, said hello and he just looked at me and carried on, walking round the peak with a bag and what looked like a little easel attached to it. all the folks left this high peak and when e and i awoke from a nap, the only one remaining was the merlin and his easel.  he was, in fact, drawing. the easel propped on this knees and thighs, pen or paint even to paper high in the sky, following the valleys in the distance and in unison with both his eyes and his hand, it made me think of the group of seven and their pilgrimages to the canadian wilderness.

on baldhead peaks...

doubles had a beautiful idea a number of weeks back, the morning we drove even further north to the adirondack high peaks. E suggested that we take a big bunch of fresh kale from his garden and bring it camping with us. and that we did, picking early morning wet kale from the earth and later that day, stuffing it into our bear bin. in fact, we had kale all the way.

doubles treated me to some of the best hiking lunches i've had in a long time. miso soup cooked on top of new york state baldhead peaks with fresh kale tossed in there to make it even more especial. it's amazing how good a warm miso soup with kale tastes after hiking up a 5000 foot mountain with packs on our backs. it was so much fun we even did it twice! hiking first, mt. colden and then algonquin a day later, both times blessed to have wonderful weather!

the woods, if i may say, is where it's at.

higher than high...

a couple weeks back e-doubles and i embarked on a backcountry journey into the adirondack high peaks. it was a reunion of sorts as ethan and i hadn't been to this area of adirondack state park since the days of searchers, way back as juniors in high school, our first foray into the true wilderness, sleeping under the stars...

e & i were in the woods for three nights, sleeping in lean-tos and keeping an eye out for black bears, swimming in mountains streams, climbing tall mountains and sipping miso soup with fresh kale for lunch with stunning views of the lakes below and peaks across the way.

it was a brilliant few days and in the next few days i'll be sharing some images from our trip.
